A well-rested, content child is far more likely to enjoy the session and cooperate. That’s why it’s so important to schedule your session at a time that’s most comfortable for them. Early mornings or late evenings are usually cooler and more peaceful, creating a relaxed environment that helps litle ones feel settled .

If your session is scheduled for the evening, consider shifting naps or quiet time closer to the session to help your toddler feel refreshed.

And if your little one is happiest in the morning, it may be worth scheduling the session early to catch them at their best. You know your child best, so choose a time that works for them.

1. Choose the Right Time of Day

Planning a beach photo session with your little one? You’re in for a memorable experience—soft sand, glowing light, and those candid moments. But let’s be honest: a toddler + sand + wind + photos = a bit of a juggling act. The good news? With a little preparation, your beach session can be stress-free, fun, and full of memories you’ll cherish forever.

Here are our top tips to help you get ready:

How to prepare your toddler for a photo session

3. Snacks & Breaks Are Your Best Friends

A hungry toddler is rarely a cooperative one. Pack some mess-free snacks and water to keep them happy between shots.

Think light, flowy fabrics that move with the breeze and feel comfortable against your child's skin. Avoid anything itchy or restrictive. Bring an extra layer in case it’s breezy, and don’t forget a change of clothes—wet sand and water are pretty much guaranteed with littles!

2. Dress Comfortably (and in Layers)

Beach sessions don’t require a ton of props or gear. But a few essentials can make a big difference:

A favorite toy or comfort item (especially if it helps calm them).

A new toy can also be helpful—something that captures their attention.

It’s also great if the toy matches your child’s outfit and the family’s look, just in case they don’t want to part with it, and it ends up in some of the photos.

4. Bring the Essentials — but Keep It Simple

A beach session with your child can be one of the most heartwarming experiences. With the sound of the waves, the golden light, and your family’s unique love story, you’re already halfway to magic.

Need help planning your beach session or picking the best time and place? We’re always happy to help!

Kids are wonderfully unpredictable. They may run toward the waves, toss sand in the air, or refuse to look at the camera—and that’s okay. Some of the best photos come from real, unscripted moments. Laugh with them, play, and let the magic unfold. Trust the process, enjoy your time together, and remember: the goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection.

5. Embrace the Imperfect & Trust the Process
